History of Raja Jewellers

Since centuries ago, Sri Lanka (formerly known as ‘Rathna Deepa’) has gained the reputation of an expert manufacturer of sparkling gemstones, while renowned historical figures such as Ptolemy and Marco Polo have mentioned the excellence of Sri Lankan gemstones in their works. In fact, Marco Polo, in his ‘The Voyages and Travels of Marco Polo’, records that Ceylon has the “best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gems”.

The story of Raja Jewellers (Pvt) Ltd began in 1928 as ‘E. A. Fernando Jewellers’ in Chattam Street when the late Mr. E. A. Fernando began working on gemstones which were collected from Ratnapura, forming them into masterpieces of Gold jewellery. In 1962 Raja Fernando, the son of E. A. Fernando, who inherited not only the craftsmanship but also the entrepreneurship finesse, elevated the business to the next level and rebranded it as ‘Raja Jewellers’, today’s most embraced brand name amongst the Sri Lankan Gold Jewellery industry. Taking over from Raja Fernando in 1985 for the third generation were his sons Ashoka Eliyapura and Athula Eliyapura who then registered the business as a Limited Liability Company under the name of ‘Raja Jewellers (Pvt) Ltd’.

Since its inception nine decades ago, Raja Jewellers has attained a reputation for excellence. It has achieved this by building upon expertise, craftsmanship, commitment, and providing customers with the pinnacle of quality. Strengthened by a team of about 300 dynamic staff members, the company offers exquisite gold jewellery designs that capture the hearts of the customers, while remaining a pioneer in the Sri Lankan Gold Jewellery industry.

Throughout its existence, Raja Jewellers have received numerous accolades for its continued dedication to its craft, and the company continues to create jewellery for the valued clientele who wear them with pride and most lovingly pass them down through the generations.
